Stockpiling in times of Crisis

Vacuum packing and sensible storage

A supermarket in your neighbourhood, a restaurant in the city centre surrounded by small cafés with selected daily specials. Food seems to be available to us around the clock in Europe. Nevertheless, there are many good reasons to stock up on food and drink at home. In the event of a serious disaster such as a pandemic, a widespread power failure or natural disasters such as flooding, access to food may be severely restricted or completely impossible. This is why it is quite helpful to create a food store for emergencies with the help of vacuum sealing.

Why should you vacuum seal your supplies?

Due to the oxygen extraction during vacuuming, food stays fresh significantly longer and also retains its vitamins for longer. This means that fruit, vegetables, cheese, cold cuts, fish or meat, for example, can be preserved in a purely natural way. You can also read more information about the shelf life of vacuum-packed food in our shelf life table. Another advantage of vacuum sealed food is that it eliminates freezer burn. This means that supplies can be stored in the freezer for a long time without any problems.

We also offer you another generous advantage! Buy now and save over €60 when you buy a Lava Care Bundle.

Tips for successful storage

Well planned storage offers you a lot of advantages. With enough food at home, you can always put together a healthy meal quickly without having to go shopping. Or even better: If you store pre-prepared meals, they are always readily available when you’re in a rush. This saves you a lot of time, because you don't have to keep going to the supermarket for individual ingredients. If you take advantage of special offers on products to bulk-buy, you can also save money. Butter, for example, can easily be frozen in its packaging and can therefore be bought in bulk at a reduced price.

Build up stocks
little by little

For example, if you take home a little more than the usual amount each time you go shopping, you can progressively build up your own stocks. This means you only spend a little extra at a time.

Keep things
organised

New food should always be put in the back of the cupboard to prevent existing food from being overlooked and thus spoiling. To keep track of your home-made supplies, we recommend that you label them neatly with our labels and the corresponding permanent marker.

healthy meals

The next time you prepare your favourite dish, why not cook double the amount? You can freeze the surplus in our preserving jars with the help of our vacuum sealer attachment for jars, and if you are short on time, simply defrost the food and re-heat it.

Checklist for your food storage

As a basic principle, it is recommended to store enough food to survive for 10 days without shopping. When stocking up, you should make sure that you only store the foods that you really like and that agree with you. Our checklist makes it easy to stockpile food for times of crisis. The information always refers to a 10-day supply for one person.

An adult needs about 1.5 litres of fluid per day. To prepare foods such as pasta, potatoes or rice, an additional 0.5 litres of water per person is recommended.

The following rule of thumb applies: 2 litres per day and person for at least 10 days

Bread, oats, pasta, rice and potatoes should be in sufficient supply.

Here 3.5 kilos are recommended

You can easily store carrots, onions, garlic and various pulses such as peas, beans or lentils.

You should have 4 kilos per person for 10 days

You can buy canned or jarred fruit, or preserve them yourself with the Lava Care Bundle. Nuts provide healthy fatty acids, serve as a source of plant-based protein and also have a long shelf life.

2.5 kilos per person for 10 days

Here you should also consider your personal needs and adjust the suggested amount accordingly.

2.6 kilos per person

You can increase the shelf life of fish and meat up to 3 years, if you vacuum seal these foods and then freeze them. For eggs, we also recommend whole egg powder, which has a shelf life of between 5 and 10 years.

1.5 kilos per person

These are mainly needed to prepare meals.

0.375 kilos per person for 10 days

Everything that you can't afford to be without, such as vegetable broth, sugar, sweetener, honey, jam, Nutella, chocolate or even pretzel sticks.

A first aid kit, painkillers, disinfectants, cold remedies, fever thermometers, anti-diarrhoea medication, plasters and bandages, tweezers and your individual medication should always in stock at home.

Torches, candles and tea lights, matches and lighters, batteries, radio for battery operation, camping cooker with suitable fuel, board games, as well as warm blankets can often be vital in an emergency.
